THIS IS AUTISM

THIS IS MY SON AHMED. HE WAS OFFICIALLY DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM/ ADHD/ POSSIBLE BI-POLAR DISORDER AT THE AGE OF 3. HE WAS SEVERE, NOT SPEAKING AT ALL AND INFLICTING PAIN UNTO HIMSELF, TANTRUMS, NIGHT TERRORS.... SINCE THEN HE HAS PROGRESSED REMARKABLY OVER THE PAST YEAR AND HALF. HE CAN NOW SPEAK FULL SENTENCES, ALTHOUGH HIS SOCIAL INTERACTIONS ARE SOMETIMES INAPPROPRIATE, HE IS BLOSSOMING AT SCHOOL AND JUST LAST WEEK WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED FULL POTTY TRAINING!! IF YOU HAVE A CHILD WITH AUTISM, YOU UNDERSTAND THE SMALL ACOMPLISHMENTS!! AND PLEASE BE AWARE THAT EARLY INTERVENTION IS KEY! DON'T LET ANYONE INCLUDING YOUR PEDIATRICIAN TELL YOU THAT YOUR CHILD IS "JUST A LITTLE BEHIND" ...IF SOMETHING DOESNT FEEL RIGHT WITH YOUR CHILD, ACT ON THAT FEELING AND DEMAND AN EVALUATION. IF YOUR PEDIATRICIAN CANNOT DO IT, ASK HIM FOR A REFERRAL TO SOMEONE WHO CAN!

This is Brigette. This is autism.

A video of my 5 yr old low-functioning, autistic, beautiful daughter. Three years ago, she had zero eye contact, would not babble, did not respond to her name and wanted NOTHING to do with us. All she wanted to do was rock back and forth and shake an object up close in front of her eyes. Now she is SINGING! She's made remarkable improvements and I have faith one day she will be able to communicate with language! She may seem severe to you, but to us, everyday she just keeps improving, little by little. A Mother's Diary - Is This Autism? What is Niemann-Pick?

See Gabrielle on Fox 35 www.myfoxorlando.com www.GabrielleLaVerde.com The first eighteen months or so of her life were wonderful. She was a happy, sweet, smiling little girl, with big, sparkling eyes and she had the best belly laugh we'd ever heard. She started walking later than most, but was toddling around by 15 months. At 18 months we began to notice that she was not quite keeping up with other kids her age. By her second birthday, we knew something was wrong. Her pediatrician thought she was "perfect" and she would "catch up" at the the age three. By her third birthday, it was even clearer to us that she was having difficulty with her speech and gait. Her balance and coordination were not what they should be. Her fine and motor gross skills, speech, sight and hearing were tested. Mild Cerebral Palsy was mentioned. A new doctor mentioned that she had connective tissue issues, hyperflexible joings and nearly flat feet. He scheduled a Behavioral Pediatrician, a Geneticist, and a Neurologist. The Behaviorial Pediatrician worked with us for 1 year, and ruled out Autism. The Geneticist and Neurologist after 2 years, and countless blood tests, EEGs, MRIs and CT scans, everything was negative, except that Gabrielle was having "absence seizures". Seizure medications were discontinued after Gabrielle could no longer hold a fork or sit up. We tried the best doctors in Orlando, when finally we went to Jacksonville and met a Neuro-Muscularist. Her Geneticist thought she had ...

In this series we'll answer three of the most important questions about autism Part 1: What is autism? Part 2: What are the signs of autism? Part 3: How can you help make a difference today? Every Day Counts, Everyone Can Help - Part One: What is Autism? Autism is a developmental disability that is characterized by impairments in three areas: 1. Social interaction, 2. Communication, and 3. And display repetitive patterns of behavior and interest. You may have heard the term "autism spectrum disorder" or ASD-- this refers to the fact that the specific symptoms and severity of these three impairments can vary widely from child to child. Individuals with aspergers, which is closely related to autism, but currently a separate diagnosis, display repetitive patterns and have deficits in social behavior, without impairment in communication. There are many treatment options available, but the treatments with the most scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness for all levels of autism are strategies based on the science of Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA. Studies show that children who receive early, intensive, ABA-based treatment, can make substantial gains in language, IQ, academic performance and social behavior. In honor of Autism Awareness month, we're making our assessment tool, our entire series of ABA-based training videos, and eight video lessons ...

Customer Critiques

I have shelves filled with books with 'how to' and I have tried them all. My son, Brian now 14, has serious mental retardation, there are really few books for 'teaching' youngsters like him. I took a chance on this a single, and worth it. Thanx to the notes in the book I no longer try and stop him from bitting his hands, but understadning why, all of us at house started out to take notes of when and what happened just before and now we concentrate on the what occurs ahead of. This is just one particular terrific example.
We had a decent summer and he has created fantastic progress for the reason that of the book. We did projects with him, set actual targets and monitored. My 9 year old daughter who is a component of the team helping her 14 year old sibblings, got ideas of points she could do with him and learnt significantly about not performing 'for him'.
The instructions for action, and this is what the book spurs you to do 'act' are clear and logically. So a large number of times we go on to one more 'intervention' and when we read the explanation that leads to the action I hear myself thinking, but you know what that is logical. It will probably say 'Autism Spectrum', but it is forall of us who has a child/young adult with moderate to serious intellectural disability.
I am buying two additional copies of the book. A single to send to school when he starts in an additional two weeks, the other to my sister who we plan to visit in December. I also chair the National Advisory Board for Persons with Disability right here in Jamaica and I am going to recommending this book to all who will listen.

This book filters by means of all the technical terms and gives you swift, substantially needed data for those every day challenges that you absolutely will encounter. It deals with so numerous of the significant troubles (social, sensory, behavioral, and self-care). It is a must read for any one that knows or functions with an individual on the spectrum.

Buyer Testimonials

This is a wonderful, engaging, useful book- thoughtful with no becoming preachy, direct although getting engaging and conversational. I would highly advise this book as a gift and guide to any child who is coming into make contact with with folks with autism for the initial time (or something that marks a person as unique than their young peers). The book strikes, in my view, just the perfect tone to give a young individual insight into the wants and differences of a individual with autism, devoid of resorting to or advertising condescension or pity toward people with differences.

This is the kind of book I want to see much more of for all ages. I wish I'd had this book when I was a youngster. It sensitively and intelligently describes autism. Youngsters, neurotypical (NT) and on the autism spectrum alike will get a lot out of it. It is the voice of purpose and acceptance. If you get no other book for young people today about autism, be positive to get this 1. It is really a shining gem! I enjoy it!

Autism Spectrum Disorders | Spirituality | Real-life "Touch" TV Autistic

awetizm.com -- While scientists search to explain the sudden increase in autism, a new book sheds new light on a seemingly dark subject. In "AWEtizm A Key to Our Spiritual Magnificence," Gayle Barkley Lee and her daughter, Lyrica Mia Marquez, share an unbelievable journey revealing a key to humanity's spiritual evolution. Gayle, who is on the autism spectrum herself, successfully taps into the world of her severely autistic child and learns that Lyrica is an enlightened spiritual being here to help with the spiritual evolution and paradigm shift of our planet. The miracles do not stop with Lyrica's life. In AWEtizm, it is revealed that when autistic people are awakened, they release sacred gifts of telepathy, spiritual healing, spirituality and mysticism, and live life feeling a sense of purpose. While many refer to autism as a disability, a disease or a disorder -- we think otherwise. Rather than focusing on the cause and blaming immunizations we focus on hope. Autistic souls have chosen to be here. They have a grand purpose and are here to help raise the consciousness of the planet. Many autistic souls are waiting to release their sacred gifts.

Autism is in the public spotlight now more than ever as new research and information appears almost daily. Although in many ways this is a positive development it also presents challenges to families and practitioners who want to keep up with the latest developments and are left to sift through new information by themselves to see what is credible and relevant for them. Each of us needs a personal research assistant who can determine which information we need to pay attention to and let us know how it might affect our daily work and the children we are living with or serve.

Since we each don’t have our own research assistants on staff, I am delighted to recommend this wonderful book by Fred Volkmar and Lisa Wiesner. Both of these talented professional leaders have combined their scientific skills and understanding of the field with great practical experience and ideas about how research can be translated into clinical practice. The result is a book that provides the best and most comprehensive information about recent scientific developments and a splendid practical guide for how they are being implemented and what we are learning in the process. The issues are presented in all of their complexity but translated into language that is clear, direct, and easy to follow. The format also lends itself to understanding the complex issues and their implications through excellent charts, question and answer sections, and chapters that vary from describing diagnostic issues to stating very specifically how to expand and evaluate the services one is receiving. The comprehensive references and lists of additional resources also add greatly to the overall package.

As a professional dedicated to understanding scientific advances and helping families and teachers to utilize them most effectively, I am very pleased to have an ally like this book available. This "joke" book explains countless of the behaviors that my nephew displays who is autistic in a fresh and entertaining way.
The illustartions by the author's son certainly add a warmth and articulation to the point that the father is attempting to make.
Frankly I did not want to read one other medical definition of autism and signs and symptoms. The way Mr.Marx has developed the "Awetee world" tends to make it enjoyable and softens the whole feeling.
Bravo Zidlow Marx.

As an aspiring teacher, it seriously assists to much better know how a student views the planet. Zidlow's book sheds outstanding insight into the framework of an autistic kid by way of one of the most individual and socially complicated expressions of humans - humor. I gained a significantly much better understanding of how a kid with autism connects the dots by way of this book than I have reading dense literature on the subject. Elijah's illustrations are absolutely terrific as well.

Consumer Reviews

This book is a amazing resource for experts who work with you young children identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Sensory Processing Disorder. The author describes her orientation to working with youngsters with no focusing on the "disorders". I read the book as a former children's developmental intervention plan coordinator and social worker. Ms. Sher's approach shares social function values of a strengths perspective and individual-in-environment strategy. She looks at the children's strengths and interests and engages young children in their peer atmosphere.
I re-read the book from the point of view of a former pre-school teacher, parent and existing grandparent. I have highlighted activities for purposeful entertaining and ability improvement with my two developmentally standard preschool-aged grandchildren.
The initially two chapters should certainly be needed reading for any experts who function young kids with an exceptionality diagnosis. Also, parents of a diagnosed kid would find comfort and decent philosophical modeling by identifying with the author's understanding and insights into the child's perceptual globe.

This book covers both ASDs and Sensory Disorders, with a really good section explaining how these have an effect on youngsters, which can be very helpful in demystifying the behaviors of youngsters with these problems (particularly fundamental for parents like myself, who are new to this topic, with children who are newly diagnosed or just having diagnosed!) and this section is followed by a wealth of ideas for actions to support kids who are affected by these concerns reach their potential -- not only in overcoming these particular troubles, but also in gaining social techniques.
Included with the actions are ideas for strategies to modify them for single youngsters or groups, or for young children with precise preferences or quirks and reading through this book will no doubt serve to inspire suggestions for numerous other activities or modifications as well.
I would also like to note that, in my opinion, the title of this book does not do it justice, because "Early Intervention" implies (to me, at least) that the activities here are only for children under the age of three-four which is most certainly not the case. Employing the suggestions presented right here in group situations, quite a few of these activities could continue to be pleasant for numerous years beyond that age range, as a signifies of helping kids (specifically these with ASDs) acquire or boost turn-taking, sharing and other social techniques.
It is my opinion that parents, caregivers, therapists and educators can ALL benefit from this book, whether or not they are new to this area of study, or have years of encounter and it would be a useful addition to any of their bookshelves, one that is confident to remain helpful for years to come.
