Consumer Evaluations
This book is a awesome resource for professionals who perform with you children identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Sensory Processing Disorder. The author describes her orientation to operating with young children devoid of focusing on the "disorders". I read the book as a former children's developmental intervention system coordinator and social worker. Ms. Sher's approach shares social perform values of a strengths perspective and person-in-environment strategy. She looks at the children's strengths and interests and engages children in their peer atmosphere.
I re-read the book from the point of view of a former pre-school teacher, parent and existing grandparent. I have highlighted activities for purposeful fun and ability improvement with my two developmentally typical preschool-aged grandchildren.
The initial two chapters ought to be necessary reading for any professionals who work young children with an exceptionality diagnosis. Also, parents of a diagnosed kid would get comfort and great philosophical modeling by identifying with the author's understanding and insights into the child's perceptual world.
This book covers each ASDs and Sensory Disorders, with a really good section explaining how these impact children, which can be quite valuable in demystifying the behaviors of kids with these difficulties (specifically fundamental for parents like myself, who are new to this topic, with kids who are newly diagnosed or just acquiring diagnosed!) and this section is followed by a wealth of suggestions for activities to assist children who are affected by these difficulties reach their possible -- not only in overcoming these precise difficulties, but also in gaining social expertise.
Included with the activities are ideas for ways to modify them for single young children or groups, or for kids with certain preferences or quirks and reading via this book will no doubt serve to inspire concepts for a number of other activities or modifications as effectively.
I would also like to note that, in my opinion, the title of this book does not do it justice, simply because "Early Intervention" implies (to me, at least) that the activities right here are only for kids beneath the age of three-four which is unquestionably not the case. Applying the concepts presented right here in group circumstances, a lot of of these activities could continue to be enjoyable for a few years beyond that age range, as a signifies of helping kids (especially those with ASDs) obtain or strengthen turn-taking, sharing and other social expertise.
It is my opinion that parents, caregivers, therapists and educators can ALL benefit from this book, whether or not they are new to this area of study, or have years of experience and it would be a valuable addition to any of their bookshelves, 1 that is sure to remain handy for years to come.
