I'm not a mother. I'm the father of two wonderfully "usual" young men. I can't start to think about what the mother of an autistic child, or any unique requirements child, endures 24/7/365 for life. But I am eternally grateful to Lorca Damon for sharing her life. Autism By Hand offers an honest, oftentimes harsh, appear at how a single mother learned to care for her autistic youngster. The author warns her readers there will be no sugar coating, just actual and raw tactics that perform with her daughter.
The author likens her role to being on the edge of a cliff, holding tight to her daughters hand as the child hangs precariously over the abyss. There is no time for sugar coating or self pity, only positive action. She offers that positive action in a beautifully written narrative that inspires each laughter and tears. I read more than half the book at one sitting, unable to put it down.
Although the book is written as a guide to mothers of autistic kids, or any caregiver for that matter, it is a wealth of knowledge for any parent. I recognized various of the very same struggles we had with our own youngsters, however multiplied a hundred fold. Exactly where the parent of a developmentally "standard" kid may very well struggle across a hurdle when, or over the course of days or weeks, the struggles continue for years or even a lifetime for the autistic parent and youngster. The most mundane social expertise that our kids learned by simply becoming kids are major milestones to be overcome day immediately after day.
I could not assist but fall in like with Carrie, the author's autistic daughter, by means of the selfless unconditional like her mother reveals in each line of Autism by Hand. Wow. Not just another book on autism. This a single tells parents the actual truth devoid of any hand holding or false compliments. I enjoy that every single chapter ends with a numbered list of ways to attempt these actions with your personal youngster. I also honestly liked that these exact same methods could benefit even "standard" youngsters and busy families. It was rather non-judgmental, but at the exact same time explained why ignoring particular difficulties will not make them go away. There was some genuine honesty in the words.
