Consumer Reviews

This book is a amazing resource for experts who work with you young children identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Sensory Processing Disorder. The author describes her orientation to working with youngsters with no focusing on the "disorders". I read the book as a former children's developmental intervention plan coordinator and social worker. Ms. Sher's approach shares social function values of a strengths perspective and individual-in-environment strategy. She looks at the children's strengths and interests and engages young children in their peer atmosphere.
I re-read the book from the point of view of a former pre-school teacher, parent and existing grandparent. I have highlighted activities for purposeful entertaining and ability improvement with my two developmentally standard preschool-aged grandchildren.
The initially two chapters should certainly be needed reading for any experts who function young kids with an exceptionality diagnosis. Also, parents of a diagnosed kid would find comfort and decent philosophical modeling by identifying with the author's understanding and insights into the child's perceptual globe.

This book covers both ASDs and Sensory Disorders, with a really good section explaining how these have an effect on youngsters, which can be very helpful in demystifying the behaviors of youngsters with these problems (particularly fundamental for parents like myself, who are new to this topic, with children who are newly diagnosed or just having diagnosed!) and this section is followed by a wealth of ideas for actions to support kids who are affected by these concerns reach their potential -- not only in overcoming these particular troubles, but also in gaining social techniques.
Included with the actions are ideas for strategies to modify them for single youngsters or groups, or for young children with precise preferences or quirks and reading through this book will no doubt serve to inspire suggestions for numerous other activities or modifications as well.
I would also like to note that, in my opinion, the title of this book does not do it justice, because "Early Intervention" implies (to me, at least) that the activities here are only for children under the age of three-four which is most certainly not the case. Employing the suggestions presented right here in group situations, quite a few of these activities could continue to be pleasant for numerous years beyond that age range, as a signifies of helping kids (specifically these with ASDs) acquire or boost turn-taking, sharing and other social techniques.
It is my opinion that parents, caregivers, therapists and educators can ALL benefit from this book, whether or not they are new to this area of study, or have years of encounter and it would be a useful addition to any of their bookshelves, one that is confident to remain helpful for years to come.
