Every Day Counts, Everyone Can Help - Part One: What is Autism? Autism is a developmental disability that is characterized by impairments in three areas: 1. Social interaction, 2. Communication, and 3. And display repetitive patterns of behavior and interest. You may have heard the term "autism spectrum disorder" or ASD-- this refers to the fact that the specific symptoms and severity of these three impairments can vary widely from child to child. Individuals with aspergers, which is closely related to autism, but currently a separate diagnosis, display repetitive patterns and have deficits in social behavior, without impairment in communication. There are many treatment options available, but the treatments with the most scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness for all levels of autism are strategies based on the science of Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA. Studies show that children who receive early, intensive, ABA-based treatment, can make substantial gains in language, IQ, academic performance and social behavior.
